Sony announced the FX5 on July 22, 2026, and ships it in mid-August. It costs $4,899.99 for the body, or $5,499.99 with the XLR handle, which puts it about $600 above a new FX3 at $4,298 rather than up near FX6 money. That is a much smaller step than the pre-announcement reporting implied, and it changes the answer for a lot of people.
The FX5 is a step above the FX3, but a smaller step than the rumors suggested: $4,899.99 against the FX3’s $4,298. That puts it inside an FX3 shopper’s range instead of out of reach. Buy the FX3 if you need a body now, or want the proven one for less. Weigh the FX5 if the extra spend buys something you will actually use: a stacked sensor, triple base ISO and internal X-OCN RAW. Either way our call is to wait for shipping units in mid-August rather than order on a spec sheet.
What the FX3 actually is today
The FX3 is a known quantity, and these are facts, not rumors: a 12.1MP full-frame sensor built for low light, internal 4K up to 120p, 5-axis in-body stabilization, and Sony’s full autofocus. In May 2025 Sony quietly refreshed it as the FX3A, which adds a sharper 2.36M-dot rear screen and drops NFC and the infrared remote receiver; everything else is unchanged. It lists at $4,298 as of July 2026, up from the original FX3’s $3,899 launch price, and its firmware has kept pace: Ver. 3.00 in 2023 brought anamorphic de-squeeze and true 24.00p DCI 4K, and Ver. 7.00 in August 2025 added the BIG6 home screen, Blackmagic RAW output over HDMI and 1.5x/1.6x de-squeeze. In other words, the FX3 is not a camera made obsolete by the FX5 arriving. It is a current, supported body that sits one rung below it, at a lower price.
How to decide
Match the camera to your actual work and budget, not to the launch noise:
- Choose the FX3 if you want a compact full-frame run-and-gun or gimbal body, the lower price fits, and you value a proven camera with a long firmware track record. The FX5 existing does not degrade it.
- Choose the FX5 ifyou will use what the extra spend buys: a 16.6MP stacked full-frame sensor, triple base ISO of 800, 4000 and 12800, 5K open gate capture and internal X-OCN LT RAW, none of which the FX3 has. Know the gaps first. There is no internal ND filter, where the FX6 has one, no photo mode, and 4K 240p arrives only in a later firmware update that Sony’s own page dates to August 2027 or later. Sony publishes 15+ stops of dynamic range, not the 16 the rumors promised. Every one of those is a confirmed spec on the tracker, not a reservation of ours.
- Consider a used FX3 if you want to spend less and start shooting now. A new higher body tends to nudge some owners to upgrade and sell, which can loosen used FX3 supply once FX5 stock actually lands. We cover that in buying a used FX3.
One caution whichever way you lean: “announced” is not “in stock,” and a launch-day spec is not tested performance. Cinema Line launch stock tends to slip past the first ship date, and nobody has graded real FX5 footage yet. If you can wait for shipping units and independent reviews, wait.
